About this work

Volunteer designer and developer for a nonprofit cancer foundation

The Blake Pottle Foundation was created by Blake's family after he passed away from stage 4 colorectal cancer in 2021. I built the site from scratch, including all DNS configuration and server setup, and have owned every design and development decision since.

I work directly with the family to ensure the site reflects their voice accurately. The design was shaped around Blake's preferences, his love for the Northwest, and the community that meant so much to him. Many of the images across the site were taken by Blake himself.

Updates are made throughout the year including new blog posts, impact stories, race details, and board changes. I also provide training and support so the site remains sustainable as the foundation grows. In 2025, the foundation donated $86,000 directly to cancer patients, caregivers, and medical teams, its strongest year to date.

Contributions

Design, engineering, and ongoing ownership

UX and visual design

Design shaped around a specific person and community

Designed every page and layout with Blake's aesthetic sensibility and the Pacific Northwest at the center. Worked directly with his family to ensure the site reflects their voice and mission accurately. The site uses photography Blake took himself, keeping his perspective central to the experience.

Engineering

Full-stack ownership from infrastructure through production

Handled all DNS configuration, server setup, and full-stack engineering including contact forms with reCAPTCHA, Stripe donation integration, race registration, a responsive sponsor grid, and an active blog. Fully responsive across all devices.

UX architecture

Information architecture designed to scale with the foundation

Structured the site to support a growing nonprofit's needs across multiple content types: impact reporting, event logistics, blog publishing, donor flow, board information, and race registration. The architecture has expanded over five years without requiring a rebuild.

Stakeholder collaboration

Direct partnership with the foundation's family and board

Work directly with Blake's family and board members to keep the site accurate, respectful, and aligned with how the foundation wants to present itself. Every update is approached with care given the personal nature of the work.

Selected work

A live 501(c)(3) site, built and maintained for 5 years and counting

The design is grounded in Blake's own photography and his connection to the Pacific Northwest. Every page balances the foundation's emotional mission with the practical needs of a functioning nonprofit, from donor flow and race registration to impact reporting and ongoing blog publishing, across desktop and mobile.
